At pickup one afternoon, I saw a seventh grader messing with Nathan's backpack. My knee-jerk reaction was, "Why is this big boy bothering my son? And why aren't any of the teachers doing something about it?" Then I realized that the boy was helping Nathan zip up his backpack, and I calmed down.

When Nathan got in the car, I asked him what was going on. "Oh, that's Patrick. He helps me out in math class and grades papers for the teacher."

I love that our school has the older kids mentoring and helping the younger ones. When I was a first grader, I was scared to death of the big kids. They were just so BIG. Considering that Patrick's about 5' 10" and still growing, the kids are still big. Just nicer.
