Mama, where do babies come from?
We pulled into the store parking lot. Shutting off the engine, I
turned around to ask Nathan to get out. He then asked me the mother of
all questions. "Mama, how does the baby come out of the mommy's tummy?"
I was prepared, having rehearsed it in my mind for years. I offered
Nathan a short, age-appropriate explanation involving vaginas, pushing,
and pain. Feeling I did a terrific job, I mentally patted myself on the
back. Then I noticed Nathan huddled in the back seat looking stunned.
"You know you can ask me questions anytime. Are you OK?" I asked.
"Mom, I'm freaked out. Boy, I'm glad I'm not a girl," he replied.
