About This Blog

Welcome to my blog. I'm Anne-Marie Nichols, a 40-something WAHM to Nathan, 6, and Lucie, 3. I've been married 12 years to their dad Paul, a scientist. When I'm not doing the mommy thing, I'm a freelance writer, and vice president of the board of directors for a Colorado public charter school. In my spare time I like to sleep, eat, read, and decorate cakes.

I created this online journal to share some entertaining and insightful stories from my own experiences as a writer, domestic engineer, and mom. I encourage you to share this blog with your friends, and hopefully it will spark some lively discussions on issues we can all relate to. Enjoy!

Today's Recipe

Banana Sour Cream Waffles
Servings: 6-8 waffles
Prep and cook time: 20 minutes

These waffles are light in texture but intense in flavor. Serve maple syrup as a wonderful complement to the fruit.

Call me Hef

Category: Just Me

I love pajamas. They're the perfect clothing. Nothing says comfort like flannel jammies. After all, it's the only time adults can get away with wearing something adorned with cartoon characters.

I lust after pajamas with cute graphics (for me and the rest of the family) and was thrilled to see that Target sold Nick & Nora sleepwear. So when they went on sale -- got two pairs for $12 -- I just had to get them even though my pajama drawer was near to bursting.

Occasionally the kids and I will have a pajama day and never change into regular clothing. We'll just change into clean pjs at bedtime. Or sometimes Lucie and I will come back from dropping off Nathan at school, and change back into our pajamas. Since we're going to be home all day, who cares?

But please don't think I'm one of those moms who walk their kids into school wearing a coat over their pajamas and slippers. Please, I do have some pride. I may not make it out the door with makeup on, but I've showered and taken the time to put on some real clothes. (Yes, I admit the black pair of fleece pants you'll see me in around town in are pajama bottoms, but you'd never know it unless I told you.)

However, at home I'm a pj girl 24/7/365.

At the movies

Category: Family Fun

Paul's winter business and hunting trips always coincide with the winter movie releases. Last year, it was Narnia, which I took Lucie and Nathan to see even though they were only two and five. Lucie took a short nap and Nathan got a little scared during the battle scenes. Still, we had a great time and the kids remember it fondly.

There are some great children's movies coming out this year, so I think we'll be going to the theater several times. We go to a big, high-end mall that is rather far away from us. While there are movie theaters closer to us, this mall has one with stadium seating and big, plush seats. Definitely worth the trip for that and a food court that has sushi or fish tacos for me, and McDonald's for the kids.

So, I guess we have a new winter family tradition. Yet, I'm a little sad about it. It would be nice if Daddy could be at the movies with us, too.

The photographer's subject

Category: Kids & Growing Up

I attended a business class the other day through my local chamber of commerce. The speaker discussed how studies show that most people's personalities are set by the time they're 10, though some researchers say as young as eight.

I really don't believe that. My kids' personalities were set in stone since they were born. Nathan has always been on the go and somewhat on the impatient side (which explains why he was born seven weeks early).

Lucie is the artistic one and likes to dance, draw and paint. While Nathan tends to pick outfits that don't match (thank goodness for school uniforms), Lucie's terrific with color. I was blown away when she picked an outfit -- panties, shirt, pants, socks and shoes -- that not only matched, but was a pretty sophisticated combination of light pink, hot pink, white and black.

So, I'm not surprised that Lucie's interested in photography. It goes with her personality and interests. But what amazes me is that she's good at it at such a young age. She's taken some really good shots -- subjects are in focus, centered and usually don't have their heads chopped off. There's a bit of an issue with her finger getting in the way, but that's just a matter of training her to hold the camera properly.

Now, if I could only get her brother to stop pulling down his pants every time she takes a photo of him. Needless to say, that behavior fits with the wild, naughty monkey side of Nathan's personality.
