Recent PostsAbout This Blog Welcome to my blog. I'm Anne-Marie Nichols, a 40-something WAHM to Nathan, 6, and Lucie, 3. I've been married 12 years to their dad Paul, a scientist. When I'm not doing the mommy thing, I'm a freelance writer, and vice president of the board of directors for a Colorado public charter school. In my spare time I like to sleep, eat, read, and decorate cakes. I created this online journal to share some entertaining and insightful stories from my own experiences as a writer, domestic engineer, and mom. I encourage you to share this blog with your friends, and hopefully it will spark some lively discussions on issues we can all relate to. Enjoy! Blog CategoriesToday's Recipe
These waffles are light in texture but intense in flavor. Serve maple syrup as a wonderful complement to the fruit. |
Jun 18 2009My daughter, the doctorCategory: At HomePaul and I are convinced that Lucie's going to be a doctor. Even before she turned three, she loved to play with the doctor's kit Santa gave her last Christmas. When Nana was here, they watched a veterinary show on Animal Planet. For several days, all Lucie could talk about was being an "animal rescue doctor" so she could help dogs when they "had blood" (Lucie's term for being injured). She's fascinated with boo-boos and being sick. Also, she's constantly decorating her body with band-aids and slathering ointment on her "scratchies" (patches of eczema on her legs, tummy and arms). The other afternoon, Lucie walked into the kitchen wearing the glasses from her doctor's kit and holding a play stethoscope. She greeted me by saying, "Hi, I'm Dr. Sushi. How are you today?" Gosh, a real live house call. Hope my insurance covers it.
Jun 12 2009I love you, tooCategory: At HomeOnce the spare room became Lucie's bedroom, I no longer had a place to dump all the projects I was working on. So now my bedroom is the staging area for laundry that needs to be folded, presents that need to be wrapped, and objects that need to be fixed. At the moment, there is a large mirrored shadow box leaning against the wall that needs a chain attached. It's currently the only mirror in the house that Lucie can see herself in without standing on a chair. When she gets dressed, she runs to my room to check herself out. One evening I observed Lucie talking to herself in the mirror. Divided into several sections, she kissed her image on one side and said, "I love you." Then she kissed her reflection on the other side and said, "I love you, too." I'm not sure why she was giving the two Lucies kisses, but it was a delightful moment I cherish.
Jun 10 2009That's my boyCategory: At HomeNathan has a behavior chart. When he's good he gets a sticker for the day, and so many stickers equal a reward, like going swimming at the rec center. On February's chart, with no prompting from his father, Nathan decided 10 stickers equaled buying his mother a Valentine's Day gift. Awwwwwww. But it doesn't stop there. If you let most boys of six go shopping for their moms, they'd probably come back with a Hot Wheels car. (These are the same kids who grow up and buy their wives toasters for Christmas.) Instead, Nathan asked his dad to take him to the antique store so he could buy me a copper necklace. (I collect vintage jewelry from the '40s and '50s.) That boy's getting to be as awesome a present shopper as his old man. So here's a little shout out to my first born. You've made your mama proud.
