Supersonic Spaceship Treats

By Beth Wells

What child hasn't wished to be an astronaut aboard the Space Shuttle? Let your kids' imaginations soar beyond the stratosphere with these Supersonic Spaceships, built with parts of snack foods. Lynda Hannan of Ohio says that even son Jack's "6-year-old chocolate-lovin' girlfriend" pitched in when they made these cosmic treats. They made the treats following a pizza party. "It was a fun activity to do together," Lynda says.

The S. kids, also of Ohio, loved making these treats, according to mom, Tricia. They made the spaceships as an after school activity. "The ingredient list was their dream list. They had lots of fun using the frosting and eating it as we went," she says. "It might be fun to do this with a space learning day at school or in conjunction with a Space Shuttle blast off." And the assembly is relatively simple.

What You Need:

  • Miniature chocolate cake rolls (e.g., Swiss Rolls, Hostess HoHos, Little Debbies)
  • Chocolate-covered graham crackers, cut in half crosswise
  • Chocolate frosting
  • Hershey's Kisses or Hugs
  • Fruit leather

What to Do:

Begin wrapping a half-width of fruit leather at one end of the cake roll. Roll it to form a cone for the shuttle nose. Pinch it together as you build it up. Insert the tip of a Kiss or Hug into the other end of the roll as the thruster. Lay the roll flat on a plate or napkin. Frost the cut edge of three half pieces of chocolate-covered graham crackers. Attach them to the roll on the top and sides, and get ready to blast off!
